How Much to Tip a Bartender
The standard bartender tip is $1โ$2 per drink or 15โ20% of the total bar tab โ whichever is higher. In the US, bartenders rely significantly on tips, typically earning $2โ$4 per hour in base wages that their tips are expected to supplement.
The general rule: tip per drink for individual drinks ordered at a casual bar, tip by percentage when you're running a tab at the end of the night. Always tip at the end of the night on the full tab โ tipping per round as you go gets confusing and can lead to under-tipping if you lose track.
For craft cocktails โ where the bartender is muddling, layering, infusing, or working with house-made syrups and premium spirits โ $2โ$3 per cocktail or 20%+ is more appropriate given the skill and time involved.
Bartender Tips by Bar Type

| Nightclub / High-End Bar | 20% on tab | Bottle service: 15โ20% of total |
| Hotel Bar | 15โ20% | Same as restaurant standard |
| Open Bar (wedding/event) | $1โ$2 per drink | In cash; bartenders still earn tips |
| Brewery / Taproom | $1โ$2 per pint | Slightly lower than cocktail bar |
| Wine Bar | 15โ20% of tab | Glass pours to full bottles |
Should You Tip at an Open Bar?
Yes. At a wedding, company event, or any open bar, the bartenders are working and deserve tips. Even though drinks are free for you, bartenders are paid normal wages and their tips are not included in the event cost. $1โ$2 per drink is the standard. Many guests at open bars forget to tip because there's no bill โ but the bartenders absolutely notice and appreciate it. Bring a few small bills specifically for this purpose.
